Travel Insurance & Healthcare

Do you need travel insurance for Jersey?

We recommend you take out travel insurance when visiting Jersey to cover you for healthcare costs or medical treatment. If you don’t have travel insurance in Jersey, you’ll need to pay for certain medical treatments, should you need it. We recommend you include cover for repatriation or if you require a transfer to obtain medical treatment elsewhere.

Travel insurance will also cover you against loss or damage to personal effects, delays, repatriation in the event of illness, accident, or death, vehicles and other property, vehicle breakdown insurance, and personal travel cover for cancellation of journeys for reasons beyond our control. Please note that the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) is not valid in the Channel Islands.

Reciprocal Health Agreement

Jerseys’ healthcare service is not part of the NHS, so for UK visitors some medical care is covered by the reciprocal health agreement between the UK and Jersey, but some will need to be paid for. You won’t be covered for non-urgent conditions or urgent conditions where treatment can be booked for a later date. Emergency urgent treatment is covered as stated by Gov UK guidance. You will need to pay for:

Emergency medical care

If you require emergency treatment you should visit the Emergency Department at the nearest hospital. If you require an ambulance, dial 999.

Emergency treatment in the hospital is free of charge, but if you need ongoing treatment, this may not be covered. Without travel insurance you may need to pay for treatment which isn’t classed as an emergency, along with repatriation, which can cost around £5,000.

Non-emergency medical care

If you are unwell and require non-urgent medical care you will need to contact a local GP or out of hours service. This will incur a charge, which will be advised by the GP. This extends to dental services which are not free of charge.

For detailed information please visit the Government of Jersey.
