This collaborative effort is a call to arms for community members to dive, paddle, snorkel, or stroll along the coast in a united mission to rid our waters of debris and harmful pollutants.
Set for Sunday, 09 June, the day will kick off with a session for qualified divers at Bouley Bay, followed by a community snorkel and paddleboard event aimed at collecting plastics and rubbish from the waters off Jersey’s North Coast. The initiative will also include a beach clean, making it a comprehensive effort to safeguard our marine and coastal ecosystems.
Toyah Tomkins, Managing Director of Bouley Bay Dive centre stated:
"World Ocean Day is a reminder of the incredible beauty and importance of our oceans. This year Let's come together to celebrate and give something back to our precious seas that we all use and love so much in Jersey . I am a strong believer in Every small action makes a big difference and I am excited to be in a great position as the owner of Bouley bay dive to help facilitate and educate the community on our local seas."
Echoing this sentiment, Tamsin Raine, Founder of Ocean Culture Life and World Ocean Week organiser, emphasised the event’s broader significance:
"World Ocean Week celebrates the beauty and importance of our oceans while fostering a community effort to make a meaningful difference. With Condor’s generous support, we’re excited to provide a platform for safe, guided experiences in the sea, making ocean wonders more accessible to everyone."
Additionally, the event will feature an exhibition of local ocean photographers, showcasing the diverse marine life attendees can expect to see beneath the waves, further enriching the day’s activities and highlighting the beauty that lies beneath the surface.
The cleanup schedule for Sunday, June 9th, includes underwater cleanups starting at 10:00 am at Bouley Bay, followed by the guided snorkel and paddle board cleanup at 11:30 am, and concluding with a coastal cleanup at 1:00 pm. Participants will be provided with reusable mesh bags for collecting underwater debris and rubbish collection bags for beach efforts.
Justin Amey, Condor’s Head of Sales Marketing, reflected on the company’s commitment:
“As a ferry operator, our connection to the sea is intrinsic. We're actively pursuing waste reduction on our vessels and implementing measures to protect the marine environment. Collaborating with Ocean Culture Life and Bouley Bay Dive Centre on this initiative is something we’re truly enthusiastic about and hope to see evolve into an annual tradition.”
Together, these efforts not only aim to cleanse our waters but also to inspire ongoing commitment to ocean conservation, showcasing the power of community action and the importance of preserving our planet’s most vital resource.
